Aeration means puncturing the soil with small holes to enable air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger lawn.

Your lawn is a likely candidate for aeration if it:
- Gets heavy use. For example, if children and/or pets consistently run around the yard, they’re contributing to soil compaction.
- Was established as part of a newly constructed home. The construction traffic often causes the topsoil to become compacted.
- Dries out quickly and has a spongy feel. This could mean your lawn has a thatch issue.
- Was established by sod, and soil layering takes place. Soil layering is the existence of fine textured soil, like sod, being layered over the previous coarser soil. This layering obstructs proper drainage, as water is trapped in the finer-textured soil. Aerating breaks up the layering, allowing water much easier access to the roots.
